You missed a great year in Theatre. Lieutenent of Inishmore was my favorite play (even better, I thought, than the much feted History Boys). I don't think anything can top your musical recommendation. Spring Awakening (which could be described as "History Boys on crack") is amazing! Interesting that like you, I had some reservations when I first saw it at the Atlantic (I wished it hadn't been as emotionally distancing), but when I saw at on Broadway, I was weeping at moments that had never affected me before! This is definitely a show that gets deeper and deeper the more you see it. It's not surprising that the reviews, which were enthusiastic with qualifications off broadway, turned into out and out raves of the kind not seen in recent memory. Love it.

i must have missed something with spring awakening. to be honest, i was bored out of my mind for most of it -- wasn't anything i hadn't seen before... and the music -- it sounded like one long song played over and over again with a slightly different melody each time... but i am an old lady, compared to you!...

which strip club did you work at this year!!!

ditto on spring awakening, something's missing but love the music, i hope you got the soundtrack! (i did) as per the previous comment, in my opinion, spring awakening is a cross between history boys and altar boyz.

about sylvie guillem & push though...it was great (for me) to finally see her live on stage and loved the lighting in the performance.

Just to confine this mainly to art, a few remarkable exhibits you did not mention were:

1) the Ambroise Vollard exhibit that just closed today at the Met. Vollard was a major dealer who sold work by Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Renoir, Picasso, and more. The show included some amazing works, such as a Starry Night by Van Gogh borrowed from the d'Orsay, and Gauguin's great Where are we from, where are we now, and where are we going? - which to my amazement the Boston MFA allowed to travel.

2) also at the Met, the ongoing small exhibit of modern German portraits. This may really interest you, Matt, as the satirical nature of some of this work is closely allied with the subject and manner of The Green Table. (In fact, the George Grosz "Empire of the Sun" also depicts politicians haranguing around a green table.) The Neue Galerie, btw, also had a recent exhibit focussed on Klimt, whose Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer has been purchased for their permanet collection.

3) the ongoing exhibit of Spanish art at the Guggenheim, spanning from El Greco to Picasso, may well be the greatest show I have ever seen there. I spent 3 1/2 hours going through it.

As for theater, I would certainly add the Tom Stoppard "The Coast of Utopia," his trilogy on political intellectuals from Russia in the 19th century. It is a very demanding theme for the audience, but the acting (from stars such as Brian O'Byrne, Ethan Hawke, and Billy Crudup) is phenomenal.
