In the past few days I have devoted a little bit of time to searching the hidden depths of YouTube for choreography of interest. Every search I go on leads me back to my love for Jiri Kylian. His choreography has such a fun weight to the movement but at the same time a fluidity that never makes it seem heavy. One of the very first performances I saw ABT do as a young adult was of "Petite Mort" several City Centers ago while I was in Studio Company. I had seen many performances by the company as a kid but this is where my opinion really started to take shape. Not only did the dancers of the company dance it beautifully but the piece itself was simply breathtaking and unlike anything I had ever seen. Lucky for everyone reading, there is a clip on YouTube of the final seven minutes of the piece. Please take the time to watch Netherlands Dance Theater performing this, it's well worth it.
The second clip I found is from the piece "Falling Angels" which I had the pleasure of seeing while I was in Amsterdam. This piece for eight women was created in 1989 yet still looks powerful and new today. The clip below only shows a hint of the power that this piece contains as the drumming and the movement escalate to a euphoric state through the progression of the short ballet. The unpredictability of this piece is stunning as well. During the various peel offs of sharp movments you can't tell who is going to move next or if they will even continue with the same pattern. It is more proof of my love of incredible unison movment and these women look beautiful doing it.
Matthew,
I do apologize. The DeKooning show I mentioned last week at L&M was on in 2006, not 2007.

Hello,
The 2nd clip didn't load for me, but the NDT one was filled with excellent cor., dancing and music. Nice. One of the things that strikes me about the piece is how seemingly intimate it is , obvious trust among each partner, without in anyway appearing perverse or sexual in nature. I think that is one of the things that fascinates me about the medium of dance; the use of the body to convey emotions other than for sexual pleasure.
Hope you're feeling better. Happy Memorial Day!

Okay, I viewed the 2nd clip. I see exactly what you meant by the unison of movement and the unpredictibility of it all. I just kind of let my vision go unfocused so I could quickly find the 1st person to move differently.

Larry, thanks for the clarification :-) Bummer that it was a year ago. I would love to have seen it.
Glad that everyone is enjoying this clip! I am awaiting the netflix dvd containing the full lengths which I cannot wait for!
Unfortunately it's going to be a while until I see it. I'm still rather sick so I'm going home for a few weeks tomorrow morning. Let's hope that it's just what I need. This is the 6th week and I don't know how much longer I can take!!!!!!
Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone.
