I'm sitting in bed watching "Garden State" which I happened to pick out from my collection at random tonight (perhaps I was craving a huge dose of Vitamin Emo?) This is only my second or third time watching it all the way through and I just DO NOT get what all the fuss was about! Great soundtrack, sure. But it's like I keep forgetting that I dislike the film itself. And don't get me started on Natalie Portman. She drives me nuts in this movie. Am I crazy?
(The movie leaves me feeling like Natalie Portman looks in this picture: stunned by a taser.)

I never really got what all the fuss was about either, and sort of figured that maybe it was too hyped by the time I saw it. But to me it feels like a movie that tries so very hard to seem cool and original in a kind of effortless way, but winds up being a string of cliches without much of thought behind them. Without the soundtrack--which is also a bit self-consciously cool, no?--I'm not convinced it would have received the reaction it did.
So no, you're not crazy. Or at least not alone in your craziness.

You're not crazy! I thought I was the only one that thought "Garden State" was overrated!

Meg you perfectly summed it up! Much more concise than I could manage laying in bed at night when I posted this!
Glad you girls agree, I don't know why I own this movie. Although, as my friends will tell you, in my big collection I have MORE than a few duds. :-)
