A familiar face hits newsstands this week in none other than Newsweek Magazine! Sascha Radetsky, ABT Soloist and friend, makes his publishing debut with a fantastic article about the stigma associated with male dancers. I couldn't be more proud of his incredibly articulate article and hope that it's just the beginning of his writing career. When I made it to the end of the article, all I could think was "damn, I wish I had written that!" The ultimate compliment from one writer to another. Congrats Sascha! Check it out for yourself and pick up a copy on newsstands now.
Side note: How killer is that photograph?! Taken by Nathan Perkel.
That was fantastic! He is so hot by the way. And how cool is that pic?

Oh yes I saw this online. I found it very interesting, even though I'm a girl. I feel bad for the guys cause they get so much crap about dancing.

Love both the article and the photo! Congrats to Sascha!

I also thought this article was fabulously written. And the picture! The way the photographer catches him when his feet are neutral and his upper body is so relaxed, it almost looks like he is standing on the ground and it was photoshopped.

I beg to differ. I found the article tedious, stereotypical and old old old. Tired.
Why does Radestky feel the need to defend his sexuality? As if anyone gives a toss - unless of course he's hiding something, the empty vessel after all, makes the most noise.
It's tiresome that such regressive drivel is still published in the name of dance coverage in the millennium. This was tired fifty years ago.
And you're not a writer - please, Nabakov was a writer - you're a self-indulgent hack, Radetsky something less.
If you were a writer, though, you'd let this post stand. The moment you delete it - you're as censorial as a Soviet.

No, it isn’t new stuff. Yes it is sad that it’s being said in 2008. However, there’s a patent need to say and repeat it. (And more specifically, for someone who is bloody good at what he does and can give a well-backed account to say it.) The need to say it (again) now says more about our society than about Sascha. In fairness, perhaps the article was misplaced. Dancers don’t need to hear it. Millions of others do.
There are many breeds of writer. In some respects – ‘candour, honesty, authenticity’, drawing from experiences, pairing preservation of a childlike openness to learn, change, develop with a more mature critical ability – Matt’s an admirable writer. Well, person. And he documents that. Uses written word as 1) extended cognition – to document and understand things 2) a canvas for small pieces of elegance. Through simple deduction, Matt is a writer. I like a healthy argument, but really, if you don’t like his writing, don’t read it.

On another forum (devoted to classical music), I recently read the following comments from two individuals:
"I have not met any grown-up man who likes ballet. More of a feminine thing. Obviously the music composed for Ballet is sublime, but the actual ballet...."
"I can't see any grown-up man liking ballet. It's like a man taking up weaving."
Radetsky's article may be saying things that balletomanes take for granted, but the points still need to be made given the likely audience. If people devoted to classical music, a minority interest at best in this country, can take such an unenlightened and uninformed attitude towards dance, then think what kind of stereotypes still persist among large segments of the American population.
My only real objection to Radetsky's article is that he seems rather defensively to want to say to the world, "Yes, I dance! but I'm straight!" He's like the actor playing a gay character who feels he has to go out of his way to assure the world he's not gay himself, and I wonder how he would (or could) have handled the same issue had he been a gay man.
I wouldn't be surprised if Radetsky's article was given some editing at Newsweek (whereas Matt simply writes whatever he wants on this blog, with no editorial intervention). But with the one caveat above, the article makes its points effectively enough.
Hey, maybe I should write a piece for Newsweek on the generally uninformed and unenlightened attitudes towards classical music in this country . . .
