I'm a huge fan of the New Yorker, but like most people I know with subscriptions, I tend to get a bit behind in my reading due to the density of each issue. Because of the fact that I've been bogged down in schoolwork and articles over the past few weeks, I have had no time to read the most recent issues, but this article, "My Gal," by George Saunders, is still on my mind even though I read it weeks ago. It's flat out hilarious, and incredibly well written (no surprise there, coming from this magazine). Be sure to check it out!
In other news: after Thursday's debate, I am officially in love with Joe Biden. The only thing that would have heightened my love would have been if he had corrected Palin on her use of the word, "nucUler." Probably better that he didn't though; I might have thrown my underwear at the screen and screamed like I was watching Elvis back in '59. That's all.
Do you mean that, unlike National Review editor Rich Lowry, you didn't experience "little starbursts" as she "winked at him"?
I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.
No doubt this will be the first case in history where a voter has cast his vote because the vice-presidential candidate has given him - well, never mind. In any case, I do feel relieved that you kept your underwear in its proper place. As for "nuculur," I have a dear friend who insists on referring to those things hanging on the walls as "pitchers." Despite the appearance of such an object in the occasional Cézanne or Van Gogh still life, I prefer by not correcting him to keep our friendship intact.
