JRB and GS by CAP and BS (That's "Broadway Stars")

For those of you who aren't die hard musical theater fans, let me translate the title of this post.  That's the music of "Jason Robert Brown and Georgia Stitt (performed) by  CAP 21 and Broadway Stars."  Quite the evening at Hunter College this past Monday, where Brown and fellow composer Georgia Stitt were honored and proved why by enlisting a slew of high-profile performers to sing their fantastic material.  Here are some shots from the evening.

SEXY "VATIC"

If you want to see some sexy dancers and choreography, head to MMAC this weekend (Thursday and Friday evening at 8PM) to see VATIC. It's an hour of non-stop, hard hitting choreography (by Dana Foglia with Joanna Numata) with some of the city's best dancers who blend contemporary and hip-hop to thrilling effect.  Be sure to check out the photos below and grab your tickets now!

UNDER THE CITY OF LIGHTS

For the first few days of my recent European vacation I toggled between my DSLR and the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone.  It's just so much easier, I thought to myself, falling victim to the idea that a camera phone was all I needed to document my journey around London.  Fortunately I gave myself a swift slap on the face when I arrived in Paris.  Though I'd (finally) decided to tote my camera around with me everywhere I went, I still hadn't landed on exactly what I wanted to document my trip.  The standard tourist shots would surely creep in, but there was a need in me to come up with a series while on vacation, however straightforward given my limited means when traveling with a single lens and no lighting equipment. 

The following series started my first evening in the city of lights when I decided to snap a photo every time the train stopped.  Given the looks from the French, I gathered they were less than ecstatic about my camera pointing in train windows, at faces, advertisements, and reflections, but I trudged on and ended up taking a photo at every single Metro station I stopped at during my six days there.  Here is a preview of some of the shots I gathered. 

Keigwin + Company: "EXIT"

WHELAN ON THE FLOOR

This is a shot of the sublime Wendy Whelan for an upcoming dancer portrait project I'm working on.  I thought this image had a "Black Swan"-vibe to it...just in time for the Oscars. 

PNB TO NYC

Avi Scher's seasons are never short on star power.  Last year he welcomed ABT principals Veronika Part and Marcelo Gomes, as well as NYCB's Ashley Bouder.  This year he's importing some familiar faces who used to call NYC home: Seth Orza and Carla Korbes of Pacific Northwest Ballet.  I had the chance to photograph them in rehearsal and can't wait to see the finished product in April.  Be sure to pick up your tickets to Avi Scher and Dancers today!

Wendy Whelan @ MMAC

One of the web's most prominient dance bloggers, Philip at Oberon's Grove, was kind enough to invite me to join him yesterday at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center.  This was no ordinary day at the dance studio; Wendy Whelan, principal dancer at New York City Ballet, was teaching her second master class and I was on hand to capture some of the event. 

THE CAST IS OUT ON THE TOWN

Jim Caruso's Cast Party--a Monday night staple at midtown's Birdland--headed to the other side of Times Square a few nights ago and took over Town Hall.  The night was an all-star event featuring legends Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli along with Broadway stars Christopher Sieber, Karen Ziemba and many more.  I was backstage for the first part of the show (unfortunately I had to leave just as Liza with a Z was entering the building), and captured the following images which I'm thrilled to share today.
